Research & Summaries.
Learning Goal: I’m working on a research & summaries project and need support to help me learn.
you donit really have to visit a store, you can search about it,
Their task is to visit a store to shop for items they would be able to purchase with actual WIC funds, analyze the nutritional content of these foods, and write a 3-page report about the experience. Specific questions pertaining to course objectives will be provided in assignment requirements and prompt.
WIC serves the following populations: pregnant women, breastfeeding women, non-breastfeeding postpartum women, infants, and toddlers and children up to age 5. For this assignment follow these steps.
I provided all the information on the attachment, please ask me if you have any question, this assigment is worth of a lot of points so please let me know if you have any question or confusion,
Students are required to conduct a field visit to complete an experiential assignment. They should be
able to complete the assignment if they do not have transportation available to travel off campus. If
transportation or accessing a field site is a problem, students should contact the instructor for an
alternative assignment.
Students will be given a dollar amount that is equivalent to a monthly WIC allotment. Amounts given to
each student will differ according to “character” they are assigned i.e. pregnant woman, mother of
newborn infant, toddler, etc. Their task is to visit a store to shop for items they would be able to
purchase with actual WIC funds, analyze the nutritional content of these foods, and write a 3-page
report about the experience. Specific questions pertaining to course objectives will be provided in
assignment requirements and prompt.
WIC serves the following populations: pregnant women, breastfeeding women, non-breastfeeding
postpartum women, infants, and toddlers and children up to age 5. For this assignment follow these
steps.
A. Draw a “character” (i.e. pregnant woman, breastfeeding woman, etc.) at random in class; this
will be the subject used to complete your field experience assignment
B. Research the approximate, average cost of feeding your character a nutritious diet for one (1)
month. Create an informal balance sheet that lists general food categories, quantities, and
prices.
C. Go to a local store to hypothetically “shop” for a 1-month supply of food items covered by the
maximum amount of your WIC allotment. Pay close attention to other shoppers in the same
area where you find foods covered by WIC; try to notice if you see people shopping with WIC
vouchers or cards. Also, try to think about the emotional aspects of this experience, including
possible judgement from other people in the store. As you shop, take pictures of the
nutritional labels of the food/formula you would purchase. You will submit these as part of
your assignment. If you are buying infant formula, you would also have to buy bottles; shop
for those and take pictures of price tags too. On average, newborn infants need 7-10 bottles.
D. Return to your balance sheet. Determine how much of your monthly food costs can be
deducted by foods paid for with WIC funds*. Record these amounts on the balance sheet, and
thoroughly describe the WIC foods and categories.
*WIC allotments for each character/population can be found at https://www.fns.usda.gov/wic
and will be included in class readings.
E. The WIC food allotments have been criticized for not being nutritionally balanced, and WIC
participants report higher rates of overweight and obesity. Review the pictures of nutritional
labels you collected while shopping. Compare them to current best practice nutrition guidelines
for your character. (Make sure your source for nutrition data is reputable and sound, there are
many that qualify).
Answer the following questions
- Describe your mock shopping experience, including a description of what it might have felt like
to rely on food provided by WIC, possible reactions towards WIC shoppers from other people in
the store, and any emotions you may have encountered during this field experience. - After deducting the value of food covered by your monthly WIC allotment, approximately how
much food would your character still need to buy? - How does the nutrition provided by WIC foods compare to other recommended nutritional
content of foods? - How does economics contribute to what foods are provided by the WIC program?
- Did you notice anyone in the store shopping with a WIC card or voucher? If so, describe.
- Is WIC one of the 10 Essential Public Health services? If so, which one and how?
- How did this experience affect your understanding of the contributions WIC makes to improving
overall MCH? Explain. Include any changes you would make to the assignment.
